mixed reaction to field scheme

VILLAGERS gave a mixed reaction when they viewed plans to develop Weston playing field.

Around 50 people attended a meeting on Friday to look at the proposals for the Small Drove site.

Chairman of the playing field committee Robert White said: "This was the main reason for the meeting - to let everyone see the plans. We had a good turnout. There was a mixed reaction - only one person really objected.

Obviously it affects those people who are going to see it every day. In general people were enthusiastic. We have tried to cater for all age groups."

The plans showed the field split into a number of areas, with parts set aside for tennis courts, changing rooms, an area for nature study, quiet seating areas, green spaces and a trim trail (a trail of exercise equipment).

The new plans have to be submitted for approval to South Holland District Council - as changes have been made since planning permission was first granted.

During the meeting the playing field committee adopted a constitution, which will enable it to become a registered charity.

Officers for the charity were chosen and a new committee was elected.

Mr White added: "We adopted the constitution and this will bring us all sorts of bonuses and grant aid. We just have to wait for the Charity Commission to sort out the administration before this becomes official.

"It has taken two years to get this far but things are starting to come to a head now.

"We have already applied for two grants. The first from Lincolnshire County Council will provide us with money for the car park and access and we should hear about that any time now.

"The second comes under the Countryside Agencys Doorstep Green Projects. This money, which could be up to 50,000, would be strictly for environmental purposes - for trees and plants.

"We planted a few more trees on there a few days ago.

"We are just waiting for the administration to be done but the committee will continue to hold its monthly meetings to discuss any matters arising and to look at other grant opportunities."

And if the county council grant is approved work could start on the site as early as April.

Anyone who was unable to attend Fridays meeting and would like to see the updated plans or who would like to make a donation to the committee should contact Robert White on 01406 371475.
