THE HIGH LIFE by Spalding High School students
Whilst the majority of us were busy eating too much chocolate and generally relaxing over the Easter break, Spalding High School’s head of product design Jason Martindale took on one of the most physically and mentally arduous challenges out there, the London Marathon.
Over 26 miles of focus and determination was needed and Mr Martindale delivered. He took on this endeavour to raise money in the aid of Barnardo’s, the UK’s leading children’s charity, improving the lives of children all over the country.
His fundraising has taken many forms, most unusually a hair and beard design competition that resulted in Mr Martindale having exactly half his hair and beard shaved and dyed a bright green colour in the school hall one lunchtime.
The hall was packed and the spectacle entailed the competition winner, lower school student Ffion Lewis, and two teachers rather too enthusiastically styling his hair accompanied by a number of musical performances.
With a serious amount of dedicated training under his belt, including running from dawn till dusk some Saturdays, Mr Martindale faced the seemingly impossible challenge on Sunday, April 18 and won through, clocking an impressive time of four hours 21 minutes.
He also proved he started too far back, overtaking 2,008 people in the final seven kilometres and unbelievably being passed by only six.
All his hours of training and hard work truly paid off and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He said: “If I, ‘Last Pick Martindale’, can run the marathon then anyone can, and everyone should. It was a great experience!”
The fundraising within school and the generous donations to Mr Martindale’s Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/JasonMartindale mean he has raised over £3,000 for this worthy cause.
But not only that, he also had an amazing time doing it and emphatically believes that “everyone should do the marathon one day; it is so much fun!”.
