Marathon runner beats personal best

A primary school deputy headteacher broke his personal best time in his fifth London Marathon by almost half an hour.

Simon Fell (32) clocked a time of three hours and 17 minutes in the gruelling 26.2-mile race in the capital, raising around 2,000 in the process for the Samaritan's Purse Charity.

He ran the race with father-in-law Michael Freeman and brother-in-law Nathaniel Freeman, who was competing in his first marathon.

Mr Fell, of William Hildyard Church of England Primary School, in Market Deeping, was aiming for three hours and 15 minutes but conditions made the race difficult.

He said: "It was slightly too hot for running and I struggled a bit for the last six miles with dehydration.

"Nell McAndrew finished just ahead of me and I ran with the actor who plays Bob in Emmerdale (Tony Audenshaw) for a while, who was dressed as a gnome.

"We have a morning celebration assembly at the school where pupils are rewarded for things they have done. The staff presented me with a certificate for the race and the children all cheered, which was nice.

"The crowds were amazing and I will definitely be doing it next year."
