Marathon is ‘Mother’s Day’ for Joanne

A grateful daughter is running the London Marathon to raise cash for a hospital that treated her mum for breast cancer.

Joanne Randall hopes to collect £1,000 for breast care nurses and breast care unit development at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn.

Her mum Margaret Hurst, who lives in Long Sutton, laced up her own running shoes when aged 65 last July to take part in the Cambridge ‘Race for Life’.

Margaret’s run followed treatment at the hospital in December 2011 and January 2012.

She found a lump in her breast in October 2011 and first had an operation followed by chemotherapy.

Proud Joanne said: “I’ve always known mum to be a strong person.

“But seeing what she has endured over the past 16 months has proved to me just how strong she is and I am extremely proud of how she has handled this whole experience.

“I know this has been made all the more bearable by the endless support, care and kindness that we have both been shown by all the staff at the breast care unit.

“Marathon training can be tough and tiring but it is nothing compared to what cancer patients have to endure – and this thought is enough to keep me motivated until I reach the finish line.”

Joanne is appealing for donations.
