Man arrested after Clay Lake incident
Police have said that no firearms were brandished in an incident at Clay Lake, Spalding yesterday afternoon that saw roads closed and a man arrested.
A police statement reads: “At 4.10pm on Wednesday police received a report of a man threatening to harm himself inside a property in Clay Lake.
“The house was very quickly contained and a police firearms response was initiated. This is standard procedure to minimise the risk to the community.
“No threats were made towards any members of the public in the area and no weapons were brandished. Although the man police were talking to had potential access to firearms, no weapons were in his possession at any point throughout the incident.
“There were a small number of pupils in the nearby primary school and, as a safety precaution, and to minimise the distress caused by police activity, arrangements were made for the pupils to be collected from a rear entrance.
“A local man aged 59 was arrested for affray and is currently in custody. Some lawfully-held firearms have been seized.
“Police would like to thank local residents for their patience during the necessary road closures.”
Rumours were rife at the time that the man was brandishing a shotgun and that the pupils had been locked in the school, but police say this was not the case. At the time Inspector Jim Tyner tweeted: “I am seeing rumours on Twitter. Incident in Clay Lake has ended peacefully. No shots fired and no one harmed.”
