'Let's not have a tragedy on roads'
Pupil safety is top of the agenda in Holbeach where residents want a pedestrian crossing to get to one school while another now has double yellow lines outside to ensure youngsters are safe.
Calls for a pedestrian crossing outside the William Stukeley School began earlier this year when it sent a petition to Lincolnshire County Council, backed by the parish council.
No action has been taken but the authority is advertising for a school safety crossing patrol.
At their recent meeting Holbeach councillors said something needs doing sooner rather than later to safeguard youngsters who have to cross the busy Spalding Road.
Chairman Isobel Hutchinson said she understood that Holbeach Primary School qualified for a crossing as it is closer to the A17 and a roundabout but said that there is still the same amount of traffic passing the William Stukeley School.
In a statement the county council said the numbers of people and cars passing the school has been surveyed but they are similar to amounts recorded in 2004 – and below requirements for the installation of crossing facilities.
It confirmed it was advertising for a crossing patrol attendant and said it hoped a solution could be found soon.
Double yellow lines have been painted on the service road that runs past the school gates at George Farmer Technology and Language College after fears that an increase in traffic from two building projects could cause an accident.
Lincolnshire County Council is building a 3m state-of-the-art training centre, which will include a full-scale food standard replica production line, at the top of the road and the school is also carrying out work on its sixth form.
Headteacher Steve Baragwanath hopes parents will abide by the new restrictions and has sent out a letter asking for their assistance.
He said: "It would be a tragedy if it takes a child to be knocked over for people to start being sensible.
"We have had two near misses recently and my primary concern is the safety of the pupils."
