Lack of use puts pub under threat

Holbeach Drove will lose its only pub if plans to convert it into a residential property are approved.

Public Inns Partnership, which owns the Golden Ball, says it has tried to make it profitable since it bought it in January 2002, but has been left with mounting debt.

The pub is still open but plans were submitted to South Holland District Council last month to turn it into a residential property.

A note accompanying the application says Public Inns Partnership, based in Cheshunt, is small with an estate of ten pubs.

It adds that in the five years it has owned the Golden Ball there have been nine different managers/tenants running it.

The note says: "Despite all of our efforts we have been unable to make the pub profitable and in fact have been left with considerable debt."

Current landlord Steve Cave said the proposals are "heartbreaking" for him since he has tried his hardest to turn the pub around.

He added: "We are still trading but I have been told by head office that they want to de-license it.

"But it's just not used – that's is why it is being de-licensed.

"When we came here people said the pub was rough, so we cleaned it up and put on food but only a couple of people have been in."
