Knockout fun raises £6,000
The family of a Crowland boy who suffers from a rare disease are over the moon after more than 5,500 people helped raise £6,000 for charity.
Connor Wright (11) suffers from Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, a disease that affects his bone marrow leaving him with a dangerously low white blood cell count, the component of the blood which fights infection.
After raising 17,500 for research into Connor's disease last year, the family decided to try to match that sum again with more events for the community to enjoy.
Fifteen teams competed in the It's A Knockout competition in Peterborough.
Connor's grandmother Sue Kilby, who helped organise the day, said: "The whole family had a fantastic time, especially Connor. On Monday morning Connor woke up with a few achy limbs, but he didn't care because he just loved being a part of the event."
After being diagnosed with the disease in 2005, Connor stopped going to school as his low white blood cell count means he cannot fight off infection.
Most children have a count of between seven and 15 but Connor's registers at just 0.5.
The day started with music from Peterborough band Hooker and the games were followed by a mini-music festival with a performance from Hollyoaks heartthrob Leon Lopez.
Mrs Kilby added: "Kids were going round with collection boxes and one little boy even gave me 70p which he had raised by selling conkers. There was such a good atmosphere and we cannot thank people who have supported us enough. We are all still smiling."
