Junior wardens will restore town's pride
A TEAM of young volunteers is set to help police tackle problems and restore pride in their Spalding estate.
A band of nine youngsters have signed up for the Junior Warden Scheme in the Royce Road estate, where they will work to highlight issues such as speeding, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour.
The project was launched with Longhurst Homes, South Holland District Council, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and Groundwork Lincolnshire, who are trying to boost pride in the area and may roll the scheme out across South Holland if it proves a success.
For their first session the 11 to 18 year olds surveyed some of the worst fly-tipping and litter “grot spots” and joined with police to operate the mobile speed gun and signs to alert motorists to the 30mph limits.
Spalding Estates beat manager Pc Mark Eggar said: “The aim for us is to tackle anti-social behaviour and youth crime but also to encourage a bit of pride in the community.
“This is very much in the early stages but the response so far has been brilliant and we have had a lot of inquiries from other people.
“There are young people out there who want to take pride in their community and have a positive impact and we want to encourage that.”
The junior wardens will take part in regular events, such as clean-ups of the area, and signed up after being encouraged at a fun day held in Fulney Avenue Play Area.
There are at least two more keen to join the team and Groundwork Lincolnshire senior development officer Gemma Rainsforth says it has been delighted with the enthusiasm for the scheme, which successfully runs with just four or five people in Boston.
She said: “We were pleased with the response, especially with that age range, and they are all really good and want to be involved.
“We will look to reward them from time to time to say thank you for their efforts.”
