‘It feels like dad is buried next to a tip’

An angry son says he feels like his late father is “buried next to a tip” after rubbish piled up near his grave.

And Jon Coupland says the state of Spalding Cemetery is just symptomatic of the whole of Spalding – which he claims is “twinned with a skip”.

Mr Coupland says the problem of rubbish being dumped next to the Green Lane railway bridge has reappeared – just over a year after he battled to get the site near his home cleared.

He said: “Spalding is a disgrace.

“I went to tend my father’s grave at the cemetery at the weekend and there is an even bigger pile of rubbish than there was last week.

“The district council promised it would be cleared by the end of last week but it’s just been added to.

“There are graves just ten yards away and it’s like having your relatives buried next to a tip.

“But that’s not a patch on the mess at the footbridge at Green Lane.

“There must be 500 cans dumped down there and even a Christmas tree.

“It’s just unbelievable.”

Mr Coupland uses the footbridge most days while walking his daughter to nearby St John’s School.

He said the problem with fly-tipping under the bridge has been ongoing for more than three years.

At the beginning of last year, Mr Coupland’s complaints about the problem prompted South Holland District Council portfolio holder for waste management Roger Gambba-Jones to promise to “explore all avenues” to get the site owned by Network Rail cleared up.

But Mr Coupland believes a planned project in Green Lane to create a community garden is “asking for trouble”, as he fears it will become a magnet for anti-social behaviour and littering.
