Holbeach Parish Council defends out-of-town meetings

Holbeach Parish Council has defended its decision to hold some meetings outside the town after criticism from one of its members.

Coun Joan Woolard claimed poor attendance by the public at recent meetings held in Holbeach St Marks and Holbeach St Johns was proof that the decision was wrong.

At a meeting in Holbeach last Monday, Mrs Woolard also suggested the council was not supporting the town by choosing to meet at village venues.

She said: “The council should be doing whatever it can to get more people coming into Holbeach.

“All the outlying areas are represented by councillors at our meetings and I think it’s wrong to expect people to drive to Holbeach St Marks or Holbeach St Johns.

“Holbeach and anything relating to it should come first and I think the council should have the town as its priority.”

But other members backed the policy to show that the council represented the whole parish.

Coun Jenny Worth said: “It’s very important to remember that people in the villages are paying the same precept as those in the town and we need to treat them respectfully.”
