Lincolnshire County Council is under fire over a move to give themselves a pay rise of almost £2,000.
A councillor’s basic allowance is going up from £8,184 to £10,100 on April 1 after councillors backed the recommendations of an independent pay review panel by 50-20 at a meeting last Friday.
But the move has outraged retired road engineer Thomas Preston (87), of Crown Drive, Spalding, who said: “When you consider the people who work for the council have had a pay freeze for three years, I think it’s disgraceful that councillors have given themselves a 23 per cent pay rise.
“They should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.”
Gill Thomas, vice chairman of trade union UNISON’s Lincolnshire branch, said: “A 23 per cent increase is the value our councillors have put upon themselves, but the hard-working employees are only worth a one per cent increase after a three-year pay freeze.
“Our members provide services to the vulnerable in our society, but county councillors have stated that our terms and conditions are too expensive and that the council needs to save money.
“Perhaps it should start with councillors’ expenses and awarding themselves a one per cent increase.”
County council leader Martin Hill said: “Our county councillors are among the lowest paid in the country and even though the proposals were accepted, any member can forego all or any of their allowances.
“Despite the staff pay freeze, employees still receive an automatic increase in salary each year until they reach the top of their pay grade.
“Our discussions with the unions about modernising the council’s terms and conditions are about making common-sense changes, reflecting differences in working practices.”
