Stallholders are being sought for a market with a difference being launched in Spalding this weekend.

Traders selling vintage items like clothing, jewellery, toys and records are being urged to take up a pitch in Red Lion Street, which is set to host the town’s new Flea Market on Saturdays.

Anna Avery and Jane Fletcher, who run florist Flowers N’ Things, came up with the idea as a way of attracting more people to the town centre.

South Holland District Council has given the go ahead for up to four stalls in the street for use by occasional traders, which will cost £19.80 each per session – from around 8am to 3.30pm.

“We need to create a bit more interest in the town,” explained Anna. “We’re really lucky to be a market town, but perhaps we could do with generating a bit more interest. It would be nice to have a few more stalls, and by having a few down our street people who would like to have a go might find it more appealing.”

Several people have expressed an interest, but traders cannot sell anything that would put them in direct competition with existing stallholders and their stock must follow the vintage theme. “We are very keen to make it work, and will do anything to make it a success,” Anna added.

“There is no need for commitment from stallholders to come every week. We want to make it more along the lines of a traditional flea market, with people selling items like bric-a-brac and antiques, or even toys and records.

“Cancer Research is going to be selling vintage clothing on Saturday, but people can sell anything as long as it’s in keeping with the vintage theme.”

To help get things going Anna and Jane are also going to fund one stall themselves for a few weeks, which they will let charities and community groups use to sell items, although no tombolas or cake stalls will be allowed.
