It’s been a sad week for railway enthusiasts in South Holland who have seen the removal of historic signal boxes.
On Tuesday, the Mill Green signal box in Woolram Wygate, Spalding, was demolished after being part of the landscape for 132 years.
David Mead, who lives at the Hawthorn Bank gate house, said he arrived at 5.30pm to catch the lorry being loaded up.
He said: “It’s very sad to think the signal boxes are being removed after all of this time.
“Wait until the new crossing obstacle detectors are in operation.
“Anyone who jumps a red light will be prosecuted and a rabbit or fox on the line could bring a train to a halt.
“I don’t think they will be very popular. It will be very interesting.”
