It’s costing council taxpayers more than £1million a year to fill the pay packets of eight “town hall tycoons” at Lincolnshire County Council.

The Taxpayers’ Alliance has revealed there are 25 county and district council officers in Lincolnshire who earn more than £100,000 a year, including South Holland District Council’s chief executive, Anna Graves, who takes home £103,333.

But Ms Graves’ pay is split between South Holland and Breckland districts – making her the cheapest chief executive in the county.

Big earners at Lincolnshire County Council are:

* Tony McArdle, chief executive, £173,226

* Tony Hill, executive director of public health, £160,834.56

* Debbie Barnes, executive director of children’s services, £125,983

* Pete Moore, executive director of finance and public protection, £125,983

* Richard Wills, executive director of economy and environment, £125,983

* Dave Ramscar, assistant director of fire and emergency, £111,100.08

* Glen Garrod, director of adult social care, £105,000

* Judith Hetherington Smith, chief information and commissioning officer, £105,000

TaxPayers’ Alliance chief executive Jonathan Isby said: “At a time when councils across the country are freezing pay it appears the money they are saving is being used to line the pockets of town hall tycoons.”

County council spokesman Debbie Barnes, executive director for HR, says senior managers are in charge of multi-million pound budgets and “to attract and retain the best and brightest people we have to pay a suitable wage”.

l South Holland and Breckland share senior managers and South Holland leader Gary Porter said: “We have got the best value management team in the county.”
