Drivers caught in speed checks in Cowbit

Police speed checks on a Cowbit road have led to six drivers appearing in court.

Residents had complained to Cowbit Parish Council about speeding on 30mph Backgate since a mini-roundabout was removed.

On Tuesday the cases against six people charged with speeding on the road between August 3 and 11 went before Spalding magistrates.

Magistrates handed out three penalty points, a 60 fine and a 15 victim surcharge to:

Darren Barber (35), of School Crescent, Surfleet, who admitted in a letter to driving at 43mph on Backgate on August 3 was sentenced in his absence.

Emma Butcher (28), of Brownlow Crescent, Pinchbeck, admitted driving at 37mph on August 4.

David Hall (44), of Ashby Gardens, Moulton, admitted driving at 48mph on August 8.

Christopher Skelton (41), of Saxon Gate, Kirton, who was sentenced in his absence after sending in a guilty plea to driving at 47mph on August 7.

Alexandra Rojek (36), of Oxcroft Bank, Moulton, admitted driving at 37mph on August 8.

Richard Wenman (39), of Broadgate, Whaplode Drove, was disqualified from driving for six months under the totting up procedure after receiving five penalty points for driving at 45mph on the road on August 11.

He was also fined 85 and ordered to pay 43 costs and a 15 victim surcharge.

Cowbit parish councillor Keith Kendall said the road is frequently used as a rat run between Moulton Chapel Road and the A1073.

He said: "We had a few complaints from parishioners about speeding in Backgate and the police have been monitoring it regularly.

"However, they cannot always get there at the right times.

"It is a bit of a rat run.

"People use it when they go into work early.

"I thought it might have got a bit better since work started on the new A1073 but people are still using it as a rat run.

"The police do come down whenever they can but I suppose there are lots of villages around Lincolnshire that need speed checks."
