Donington man riding for cancer charity
Biker Larry Howman is putting his love of motorcycles to good use in a European trek for charity.
Donington rider Larry (24) will take part in the 2009 Barry Sheene Memorial Motorcycle Challenge for CLIC Sargent, the UK's leading children's cancer charity.
Larry and other Team Sheene members will ride 1,400 miles across Europe from May 26 to June 3 in a bid to raise 100,000.
They will be visiting many of the racing circuits made famous by the late British rider Sheene, including Brands Hatch, Spa Francorchamps, Hockenheim, Monza, and Monaco.
Having ridden through the amazing scenery and stunning mountain roads Team Sheene will finish their motorcycling marathon in Nice, France, after watching the Mugello Grand Prix in northern Italy.
Larry, of Mill Lane, will be taking his new Suzuki SV 650S on the journey with other riders from around the UK.
He said: "I first heard about the Barry Sheene Challenge a couple of years ago and I thought it would be a great thing to do.
"I only seriously thought about it a few weeks ago so I registered and the next thing I knew I was the last one on the team!"
He has so far raised 250 of the 2,500 needed to take part in the event, although 2,000 of this must be raised by the end of February.
He said: "It's quite a steep amount but it's a good charity which is probably not in the public eye that much.
"I have been promised a bit from my employers George Barnsdale and Sons, and my old employers Select Timber."
CLIC Sargent helps to support the ten children and young people who are diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia every day in the UK.
