District declared a Fairtrade zone

South Holland has been declared a Fairtrade Zone after three years of campaigning.

Members of the South Holland Fairtrade Steering Group received the good news a day before their annual meeting in the district council chamber.

The district had to achieve five criteria for Fairtrade status including council resolutions supporting Fairtrade, enough Fairtrade retail outlets, and good media coverage.

The guest speaker at the meeting was Emma Sundt who revealed the difference that Fairtrade has made to coffee farmers in Rwanda.

Geoff Chappell, from Spalding-based Univeg Katope UK, spoke about the import of Fairtrade fruit while students from the Gleed schools and Spalding High School presented some of the work they had carried out in supporting the Fairtrade initiative.

Steering group chairman Sue Slater said the group must now report to the foundation annually.

She said: "It has only been with the support of the council, local businesses, the local press, schools and other community groups that South Holland has been recognised as a Fairtrade Zone, for which we thank you."
