Disability Symbol a sign of good practice

South Holland District Council has been awarded the Disability Symbol by JobCentre Plus in recognition of its good employment practices in recruiting and retaining people with disabilities.

Mario Pastore, adviser manager for Spalding JobCentre Plus, presented the award to Coun Paul Espin, South Holland District Council portfolio holder for organisational development.

Norman Paskin, the district council's organisational development manager for people, said: "We are delighted to be awarded the Disability Symbol and hope to set a good example to other businesses across the area.

"We are able to offer disabled people the opportunity to be part of one of our teams.

"We have a strong commitment to equal opportunities for all our staff and customers."

The Disability Symbol is given to employers who pledge to meet five commitments regarding the recruitment, employment, retention and career development of people with disabilities.

Mr Pastore said: "JobCentre Plus is thrilled to be presenting the Disability Symbol to South Holland District Council.

"By using the symbol it makes it clear that you welcome applications from people with disabilities and are positive about their abilities.

"It also shows existing employees that you value their contribution and will treat them fairly should they become disabled."
