Death crash cyclist (19) pulled into path of car

A teenage cyclist was killed when he crashed into a car which had swerved to avoid him.

Wayne Johnson (19) pulled out onto the B1397 between Kirton and Sutterton into the path of an oncoming Mazda hatchback on July 7, an inquest at Spalding Magistrates' Court heard on Friday.

The Mazda was being driven by Mark Juniper, who swerved to the right to avoid Wayne, but the two collided.

Wayne, of Archer's Lane, Algarkirk, was propelled into the air and landed in the boot of the car.

Emergency services were called at 7.15pm but Mr Johnson died at the scene from a fractured cervical spine.

His mother Sue said her son, who suffered from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), had come in that afternoon for his tea.

He had taken ADHD medication and told his family he was going out to see friends before cycling along Struggs Lane towards the B1397, where he intended to cross over to Cherry Holt Lane.

Group 4 Securicor worker Mr Juniper and his girlfriend Jo Ducker were travelling southbound after visiting parents in Kirton End.

Both said they had no idea Mr Johnson was not going to stop until it was too late and although Mr Juniper frantically swerved into the opposite lane, Mr Johnson's bike hit the left hand side of the car, throwing him off.

The couple got out and motorists stopped to help.

They only realised what had happened when they saw a foot sticking out of the back of the car.

No defects were found in either the car or the bike and Mr Juniper was travelling well within the speed limit of 60mph.

Coroner Miss Maureen Taylor recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Pc Stuart Cook, who investigated the crash, said: "If Mr Juniper had braked and stayed going forward and the cyclist had carried on going forward they may have avoided each other.

"Mr Juniper did the right thing but circumstances were against him."
