Council opposes bill

THE chairman of South Holland District Council is against a drafted Government flood and water management bill which he believes will affect coastal funding.

The bill seeks to revise, modernise and consolidate existing legislation covering flooding, land drainage, coastal erosion and reservoir safety.

Coun Francis Biggadike, a representative on the South Holland Internal Drainage Board, said in a report to full council he is against the changes which would mean funding would be placed in the hands of county or unitary authorities and allocated on a priority basis.

Coun Biggadike said in the report: “With the Lincolnshire coastline being approximately 100 miles long what priority would be given to some agricultural land around The Wash?

“I implore members to seek out what is proposed and campaign for the retention of the way the drainage boards are funded now and run by local people.”

Full details on the draft bill and consultation can be found on the Defra website.

The deadline for consultation responses is July 24 and cabinet will discuss the matter at its next meeting on July 21.
