Chief exec idea for council
A new “temporary” chief executive could be appointed to South Holland District Council next year.
The council, which already shares a management team with Breckland Council, will consider a report into the possibility of sharing a chief executive with a third council for three months after the departure of Terry Huggins.
The move is a ground-breaking solution which would see Luton Borough Council share the services of their chief executive Trevor Holden.
Mr Huggins was the first chief executive to run two non-neighbouring councils and the latest move would be a bold move to show three councils can be served by the same chief executive.
Gary Porter, leader of South Holland District Council, said: “Shared services have become buzzwords in local authorities up and down the country and we are proposing a pioneering move that takes this concept to a whole new level.
“Whilst I stress that this would be an interim solution, so our councils can explore options following Terry’s retirement, we plan to use this opportunity to break the mould of local authority management.
“We have already proved that a chief executive and senior management team can work effectively without being tied to a single location.”
Mr Holden is the former chief executive of Breckland Council, leaving in March 2010 to take up his current role at Luton.
The proposal will be discussed by South Holland District Council on January 23, Luton Borough on January 15 and Breckland on January 24.
