Chamber reveals £100,000 plans to boost town centre fortunes

Business leaders in Spalding are finalising details of a £100,000 scheme to make the town centre more attractive to shoppers.

Ideas including a five-day craft market, permanent floral display, improved signage and the possibility of an updated CCTV system have been put forward by Spalding and District Chamber of Commerce for its members to consider.

But the most radical plan is to create a new town centre manager post with responsibility for co-ordinating projects and events aimed at boosting the town’s economy.

Chamber members are set to draw up their final wishlist for the town at a meeting next Tuesday before holding talks with South Holland District Council cabinet members who challenged business leaders two months ago to come up with ideas to revitalise the town.

The money offered by the council comes from major developers, including those behind Springfields shopping and events centre, to be used solely for marketing and promoting Spalding.

Chamber president Phil Scarlett said: “We had a discussion with district council portfolio holders about two months ago when they asked us to come up with ideas for town centre initiatives.

“Various projects were discussed at our members’ meeting on November 6 and the consensus was that we should investigate the creation of a town centre manager to move a number of these projects forward.”

The post would be funded from the council money for a minimum of four years, but Mr Scarlett said the hope was that it would generate enough income to become self-funding.

A town centre manager would also be involved in planning events such as the South Holland Food Festival and the final Spalding Flower Parade next year.
