Police are appealing for information following the thefts of catalytic converters in Crowland.

Overnight, between Wednesday and Thursday, catalytic coverters were stolen from a Seat Alhambra in Harvester Way, Crowland and from a VW Sharan in Beccelm Drive, Crowland.

A silver Vauxhall Vectra was seen in suspicious circumstances in the area and residents are asked to contact the police if they have any information regarding these thefts.

Community Policing Inspector Jim Tyner said: “Sadly, nationally there is an increase in this type of theft. The catalytic converters are stolen for the semi-precious metals that they contain.

“If you have any information please call us on 101. If you see a theft in progress, or a suspicious incident where the offenders are still there, then use 999.”

Here is some advice police have issued so motorists can take steps to protect their vehicles. Recommendations one to three apply particularly to business premises, and recommendations one to six apply to all motorists:

1. FENCING AROUND VEHICLES

Fencing around the vehicle may act as a deterrent to opportunist catalytic converter thieves.

2. DEFENSIVE PARKING

If you have a fleet of vehicles, block those with high clearance using vehicles with low clearance. This will obstruct access underneath the vehicle.

3. EFFECTIVE SECURITY LIGHTING

Good security lighting makes vehicles visible to the street without creating glare and can act to deter the thief.

4. GARAGES

Where possible park in your garage.

5. WELDED BOLTS

If your catalytic converter is ‘bolt on’ you can have the bolts welded shut.

6. ID ETCHING

Etch your converter with a serial number. This will help the police to track your converter should it be stolen.
