Campaigners call on residents to keep station dream alive

Deeping St Nicholas residents must show their support for a railway station to keep the campaign alive, according to Spalding and Peterborough Transport Forum.

The forum has applied for funding from Rail Future and if it receives 3,000 that will be matched by another 3,000 from the Deeping St Nicholas Wind Turbine Committee.

It also recently teamed up with Nicholas Watts MBE for a fundraising evening at the Jubilee Hall, with proceeds of the night, which featured a wildlife presentation, going to the campaign.

Chairman George Scott has also applied to the BBC SOS fund, which gives out funds to support causes that improve village life, and urged the public to get behind the campaign, or risk losing a golden opportunity.

He said: "People around Littleworth have got to realise that if they want a station they have got to support us and do something to help.

"The station could be the opportunity to get some small business units. There could be a paper shop or a post office.

"There are some vital things that Deeping St Nicholas is missing and this could actually bring the community together.

"It might also bring jobs in too."

The forum has worked for four years to try and lobby for a new station and needs to fund a feasibility study to prove the need to rail bosses.

Louise McGuinness said the forum disagreed with findings from the ATOC (the Association of Train Operating Companies) that Wisbech and King's Lynn should be selected for new stations and said Littleworth was the ideal site to cater for commuters into Peterborough.

Mr Scott said the Littleworth campaign has taken up most of the forum's efforts over the last year and that if it reaches the next stage shortly then the group will be looking for new transport projects to take up.

He also said that if Littleworth fails the forum may look into the possiblity of opening up a station at Donington, especially if the area is chosen for a possible rail hub to serve the food manufacturing industry.

***Please note the above story read that Louise McGuinness disagreed with the findings of the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACORP) and not ATOC (the Association of Train Operating Companies).
