Campaign to target under-age drinkers
Spot checks on shops suspected of selling booze to under-age drinkers are to be stepped up in a crackdown on drunken behaviour in Spalding town centre.
Shops found to be selling alcohol which may lead to disorder risk having their licenses suspended or revoked in the latest response from South Holland District Council to our We’ve Had Enough campaign.
More than 1,800 coupons from Spalding Guardian and Lincolnshire Free Press readers angry with ongoing rowdy behaviour in the town centre were handed over to Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Alan Hardwick, by John Hayes, MP for South Holland and The Deepings, last Friday.
A district council statement said Mr Hayes, who led our campaign, would carry on working with police, magistrates, traders and councillors to tackle anti-social behaviour and on-street drinking in Spalding.
The statement added: “Partners are continuing to work hard to ensure the town is a safe place to visit and work at all times of the day.
“The council proactively works to combat under-age drinking with test purchases at licensed premises and will continue to monitor them closely where it suspects trade may be contributing to unruly behaviour or social disorder.
“Where necessary, licenses will be suspended or even revoked.”
The statement also urges residents to report any problems with anti-social behaviour to the police by calling 101, as well as litter and fly-tipping to the council’s Community Safety Team on 01775 761161.
Speaking about the campaign, Mr Hayes said: “We’ve Had Enough brought into sharp focus what my constituents think about the quality of life in Spalding and the challenge it faces regarding the well-being of the local community.”
