Bourne shoe shining symbolic of Easter story

Church members in Bourne turned shoe-shiners on Maundy Thursday to symbolise Jesus' last supper.

The Rev Colin Martin and other helpers from Bourne Methodist Church provided the free service to market shoppers to mark Christ washing the feet of his Disciples the day before his crucifiction.

Mr Martin said: "Although we do wash feet in the church during our Maundy Thursday service we thought people would be a little reticent if we did it on the streets – so we decided to clean shoes!

"People thought we were doing it for charity but in fact we were giving charity. We also got the chance to talk to people about Easter and how it's not just about chocolate."
