Bookmaker closes amid claims it owes punters

A SPALDING bookmaker has closed amid claims it owes punters thousands of pounds.

A sign on the door of Scott Taylor Racing in Holbeach Road says the independent betting shop will be closed until further notice and apologises for any inconvenience.

According to trade newspaper the Racing Post, one professional gambler is owed more than 5,000 by the shop, which was opened in September 2007.

According to the Racing Post, Mr Smythe, from Dunfermline, Scotland, had a series of successful racing and sports bets after opening an internet account with the firm.

Mr Taylor took over the old Bert Cole Racing premises just under two years ago with business partner Luke Hutchings, but when contacted by the Lincolnshire Free Press Mr Hutchings said he had pulled out of the business six months ago and refused to comment further.

Other bookmakers have benefited from the closure including S and D Bookmakers on Winsover Road, Spalding.

Manageress Lorraine Teeling said: “People have come into our business who were with Scott Taylor asking if they can open accounts with us, and all they seem to know is what it says on the door.

“We would always welcome new people here.”

Repeated efforts by the Lincolnshire Free Press to contact Mr Taylor on three separate telephone numbers were unsuccessful.
