Blamed for dumping rubbish

Travellers have been blamed for leaving rubbish, including an old caravan and a bicycle, on a patch of countryside land.

A track at Gelder's Lane, Whaplode St Catherine, has been left covered in rubbish by the visitors who stayed at the site for a month and a half.

Gas canisters, metal panelling and sections of carpet were left discarded over adjoining fields by the travellers, who left the site overnight on Monday.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said three caravans had stayed at the site before it was left in its appalling state .

He said: "There is everything you can think of dumped there – bits of wood, cans, glasses, even an old umbrella tossed across the road. It just looks terrible.

"I know travellers are a hot subject at the moment and we haven't had any problems from them but this incident needs highlighting."

The land is owned by Lincolnshire County Council but the council did not ask the travellers to move.
