Bid to keep our heritage alive

A group which aims to preserve and celebrate Spalding’s heritage is one of the latest applicants for Smile Fund cash.

Spalding and District Civic Society has applied for £340 to buy and install a blue plaque to Salvation Army founder William Booth, who had links with the town.

The Smile fund is a £10,000 pot of money offered by Spalding and District Round Table to help the local community.

Applications have been flooding in from individuals and groups, who want the money for a multitude of uses.

The Civic Society recently installed its latest blue plaque at the home of archaeologist and author Peter Connolly in Spring Street (pictured).

In the spring the group intends to unveil another – in honour of Frank Pick, who created the familiar London Underground “brand”, before turning its attention to William Booth, who was a minister in Spalding for a couple of years and lodged in Red Lion Street and Bridge Street.

In the application, John Charlesworth says: “Such plaques bring to a community a greater awareness of its history and heritage and encourage a pride in the special character of a town.”

Other applicants include:

l Lutton Village Hall Committee, £1,000 for a kitchen project.

l Spalding Cricket Club Academy, £500 for a bowling machine.

l E Cox, £200 to take 30 Brownies on a day out.
