Attics ‘no place for the elderly’

Elderly people in Spalding will not be “put in attics” after an appeal on a planning decision was thrown out.

Councillors welcomed news Apex Care Ltd had lost its appeal to build 19 new bedrooms along with communal areas at The Bungalow Care Home in Park Road.

In June last year, when South Holland District Council rejected the plan, Coun Christine Lawton attacked the company’s plans, saying residents would live in “attic rooms” without a view of the outside world.

Proposed rooms would have been on two floors, with first-floor accommodation housed in the roof.

The proposal involved boosting the number of bedrooms from 28 to 47 with no extra on-site parking.

At the appeal in January, the inspector concluded the proposal would be an unsatisfactory form of development because the privacy of neighbouring residents could not be adequately protected without creating unsatisfactory living conditions for occupants of the proposed extension.

Coun Lawton commented after hearing the decision: “I am pleased we are not putting old people in attics.”
