A Spalding man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a motorcyclist was killed yesterday morning.

A man aged 37, from the Cowbit area, died on the A16 Crowland bypass following a crash in thick fog.He has not yet been named.

Emergency services were called out to the accident at 6am and the crash victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcyclist had been riding a Honda and the other vehicles involved were a Volkswagen Passat and a lorry.

The driver of the Passat, a 24-year-old, was being questioned yesterday at Boston Police Station following his arrest.

Police say the accident happened “half a mile from the new roundabout at Crowland” and closed the road for about eight hours while accident investigators got to work and for the wreckage to be cleared.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Officers want to speak to anyone who saw the crash – or any of the vehicles involved – before the early morning accident.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire Police said yesterday: “We are appealing to motorists who saw any activity involving a motorcyclist on this stretch of road this morning to please contact us immediately.”

Witnesses can call the Collision Witness Hotline on 01522 558855.

The motorcyclist’s death is the fifth on Lincolnshire’s roads so far this year compared with ten at the same point in 2013.

Visitors to our website have expressed their sadness at the loss of a life in this accident. One says: “My thoughts are with his family today. The sad loss of a life taken far too soon.”

But, as the safety of the bypass is called into question, the reader asks: “How many more people must die on this road before preventative measures are taken?”

* On the front page of Thursday’s Spalding Guardian there is a reference to this story that says: “Lorry driver arrested after 37-year-old motorcyclist killed on A16”. This is, of course, incorrect. The 24-year-old Passat driver was the man arrested. We apologise for any distress caused to the lorry driver and his family.
