Are we putting CCTV cameras to good use?

CCTV cameras in Holbeach need to be utilised more efficiently or parish councillors will question whether they are worth it.

That was the message from members at a meeting concerned that the 3,128 they have budgeted for 2008/09 for maintaining the cameras is not being put to good use.

Council chairman Terry Harrington said: "We spent quite a lot of money on this issue.

"We thought we were guaranteed a 90 per cent monitoring system and I feel we need to be told if this is not the case.

"If we are not getting value for money we need to look at this very closely."

Holbeach has cameras at both ends of the High Street but members said no-one has ever updated them on the progress of the cameras and how they are being used in crime prevention.

Coun Arthur Male said: "We have a contract with the police for them to maintain, report and deal with it, for which we are paying good money.

"If that is not being done that is a breach of contract."

Holbeach Pc Iain Braid said: "The CCTV is working 24/7, but it is not being monitored 24/7 because we don't have the staff to monitor it.

"It is not just Holbeach that is suffering, it is also Long Sutton and Spalding."

Clerk Jill Harrington will request an officer to attend the next meeting to talk about how the cameras are being used.
