Apathy towards town's future

A Holbeach parish and South Holland district councillor criticised the apathy of those who did not attend a meeting to discuss the town's future.

Coun Rita Rudkin was disappointed at the turnout at a South Holland District Council Local Development Framework Core Strategy Consultation meeting held recently.

While 35 Long Sutton stakeholders went to a similar event in their town a week earlier, Coun Rudkin, who joined South Holland District Council chairman Francis Biggadike at the meeting, was dismayed to see only 16 turn up to the session at the town's community centre.

She said: "The impression I got was of apathy by the community in not attending a meeting about what the council intends to do with the town in the future.

"Those who were there asked very relevant, personal questions about development."

Unsurprisingly, retail issues seemed to be of the biggest concern.

When asked what people hope to see in Holbeach in the future, a greater variety of shops; improvements and pedestrianisation in the town centre; a larger market and incentives for business start-ups were all mentioned.

Local stakeholders identified too many takeaways, estate agents and charity shops as things they dislike about the town, and added that they fear that businesses will leave and that housing development will not be matched by infrastructure.

Coun Rudkin added: "We went through things like the takeaways and the parking problems on market day. Francis and I added our voices. We got a lot out of it."
