A1073 bypass on track to be completed in 2010

The A1073 replacement route is on track for completion in 2010.

Work was stopped for Christmas but resumed this week with positioning of steel for Car Dyke bridge due to be completed by May.

Initial earthworks have been completed at two sites where roundabouts are due to be constructed and yesterday removal of extra material reserved for ground settlement was due to begin.

Preparation for the B1143 Thorney Road roundabout will see work at Newborough Main Drain with similar preparations at the road's junction with the A16.

Initial works on the A1073 Crowland roundabout will require off-peak two-way traffic lights.

Work is also progressing on a staggered junction at the B1166 Radar Corner and traffic lights will be installed from today until Tuesday, January 20.

Lincolnshire County Council head of technical services Elaine Turner said: "Creation of the new A1073 is progressing well and remains on target.

"We are looking forward to constructing this new 22km route, which will improve safety and relieve congestion in local communities, providing an important strategic link to the east of England.

"We hope road users can bear with us while the necessary work is carried out and we ensure them of our best intentions at all times of keeping inevitable disruptions as low as possible."

The permanent closure of part of Whitepost Road, near Eye, is due in early February to allow for realignment of the road.

The 80.3m A1073 Spalding to Eye improvement scheme, which will be known as the A16 on completion, is being jointly developed by Lincolnshire County Council and Peterborough City Council.
