BMXers and skateboarders in Donington are hoping to see a £40,000-plus revamp of their skate park this year.

Community group Donington Flinders Founders has applied for just over £38,000 in grants and will know in May if they have been successful and can start work at the park in Town Dam Lane.

The group itself has put £2,000 in the kitty, a further £2,000 has come from the parish council and £1,000 from district councillors.

But Flinders Founders secretary Margaret Wright says everything hinges on two big applications for grants – and, if they are turned down, they will be back to square one and have to look elsewhere.

Mrs Wright said: “It’s not the sort of money we can raise ourselves.

“We feel very, very strongly as a group that unless we keep developing the Teen Park and putting in new stuff the enthusiasm for it will go.”

Top items on the revamp list are a half pipe and spine – skate ramps that offer a bigger challenge to the park’s users.

Mrs Wright said Flinders Founders are keen to keep the older users there as they police the Teen Park and look after it.

She said: “It is an open access site and unless you keep that older age group as unofficial guardians I think you could run into difficulties.”

As well as additions to the park, the revamp includes relocation of a teenage shelter and existing skate ramps.

Donington Parish Council applied to South Holland District Council for planning approval.

Parish council chairman Peter Lorimer said the application has gone in to make sure work can start once Flinders Founders have all the funding in place.

The Teen Park opened in 2008.
