A man has been killed following a crash on the A1 northbound near Wansford.

The northbound carriageway has been closed for much of the day with motorists being told to leave the road at the A47, but Highways England have now confirmed the road has reopened at around 4.30pm.

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 11.50am this morning (April 12) by a member of the public to reports of a collision on the northbound carriageway of the A1 near Wansford.

“The incident involved a HGV and two other vehicles. The ambulance service and the air ambulance also attended the scene.

“Sadly a man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The spokesman said the lorry had collided with the central reservation.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11.55am to a road traffic collision on the northbound carriageway of the A1 near Wittering.

“An ambulance officer, two ambulance crews and the Magpas Air Ambulance were dispatched.

“One man had suffered life threatening injuries, and despite the best efforts of the teams, sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.”
