BECOMING one of the youngest people to tackle the Coast to Coast route is a feat facing a seven-year-old boy from Wyberton as he raises money for Pilgrim Hospital.

Josh Wilkinson, of Tytton Lane East, has taken on the 140-mile cycling challenge _ from Whitehaven to Tynemouth – to say thank you for the care he received at the hospital when he fell ill as a baby.

But that’s not the only goal Josh has set himself, as he also wants to complete the trip in almost half the time expected for a boy his age.

The St Thomas’ Primary School pupil will be joined on the trek by his dad Simon and family friend Wayne Huckle – and none of them have ever attempted anything like this before.

Wayne, who lives near Sleaford, said: “He said he wanted to do something to help and it just sort of went from there. We’ve been training since the middle of last year building ourselves up. We think Josh is ready for it.

“Coast to Coast says an adult does it in two days and children do it in five. Josh plans to do it in three. He’s really determined.

“We’re looking forward to it. It’s a challenge for myself and his dad as well.”

Not long after Josh was born he developed double pneumonia, MRSA and chickenpox and was taken into intensive care at Pilgrim for a number of weeks. He also spent time in Leicester Royal Hospital receiving treatment.

When he heard that the baby unit needed money for new equipment, he jumped at the chance to help.

The trio plan to raise £1,000 through the ride, which was due to start yesterday.
