Jan is our Service with a Smile winner

Nene Pharmacy assistant Jan Denwood had the surprise of her life on Friday morning when she received an award for her outstanding service to the public.

Thanks to your votes, Jan (46) is the winner of our Service with a Smile competition and beat off stiff competition from 62 nominees to claim the accolade.

Fellow award nominee Pauline Wright, assistant manager of the pharmacy at Sutton Bridge, helped us and award sponsors South Holland District Council spring the big surprise and present the glittering trophy and £100 cheque to Jan when she was busy working behind the counter.

Council economic development officer Jayne Shale said: “With the number of nominees and strong competition from the whole of South Holland area, Jan has done really well. It just shows what exceptional service she gives.”

Modest Pauline said: “The best lady won.

“I am really chuffed to bits.

She’s excellent with the customers and everybody loves her to bits.”

Pharmacy manager Paul Denwood admits to some bias because he’s been married to Jan since 1995.

He said: “I am very proud of her.

“I am a little bit biased but she’s lovely. She’s got a lovely joy for life and likes to help people and that comes across.

“I think she always likes to treat people as she likes to be treated herself.”

Jan went the extra mile to win more votes – and make people smile – by wearing a cardboard “apron” with signs front and back asking for support.

Customer Maureen Wilkinson told us: “She’s always so helpful. She bends over backwards to help you.”

Jan Denwood could hardly believe her ears when we told her she was our Service with a Smile winner.

She said: “I am so pleased, it’s making me cry.”

“I didn’t think I would win because there were so many people in it who do such a splendid job.

“It’s really nice when so many people appreciate what you do.”

Jan and husband Paul live at Lutton and they have a son, James (15).

Jan aims to treat herself at Hills Department Store in Spalding with her £100 cheque, but is sure there will be a enough for a gift for her son too.

She has worked at Nene Pharmacy for ten years and is surprised, delighted and grateful that she got so many votes from such a small community.
