Twenty Independent candidates are lining up to contest district council seats on May 7 with at least three more waiting in the wings.

Independents currently hold 12 seats on South Holland District Council while the Tories hold 25.

Among new Independent candidates are Jim Scarsbrook, a former senior officer with South Holland District Council, who will stand for Moulton, Weston and Cowbit ward, Robert West, from Spalding Civic Society, who will challenge candidates including Tory council leader Gary Porter and UKIP’s Richard Fairman in the twin seat Spalding St Mary’s ward, and vicar’s wife and lay minister Jeanne Sibley, who is standing in the three-seat Long Sutton ward.

The Tories and UKIP have named their confirmed candidates so far, although there may be more to add, but Labour and the Liberal Democrats are yet to announce their lists. Nominations for council seats close at 4pm on Thursday, April 9.

Coun Angela Newton, leader of the council’s Independent group, said: “Independent councillors are from a cross-section of political persuasions. We make decisions without having to consult a party whip.

“We cooperate with each other for a better future for district residents and we are pledged to serve your interests.

“We do meet together prior to a full council meeting to discuss the agenda and matters for debate. We are each able to put forward our points of view and are not mandated in the way we should vote. We are able to serve residents in our wards with an open mind, enthusiasm, without favour or prejudice for the whole community.”
