Holy Week has begun in Spalding with a Churches Together Palm Sunday procession through the town centre.

About 60 people gathered in Holland Market, with Gail Winner and Claire Dickens leading the procession to Hall Place carrying palm leaves, where they joined in hymns and prayers.

The procession then carried on to St Mary and St Nicolas Church.

Other churches taking part included Broad Street Methodist, St Thomas Road Methodist, Spalding Baptist Church, Spalding United Reformed Church and South Holland Community Church.

At St Mary and St Nicolas Church, about 300 people gathered for a service. The preacher was Jonathon Conrathe, a Valley Life Trust missionary, who lives in Bourne and is a member of Kingsgate Church in Methodist.

The Rev John Bennett, who is celebrating five years as Vicar of Spalding, said: “Most people went straight to church, but we were lucky with weather – we had showers but nothing like the downpour later in the afternoon.”

Holy Week activities continue today and tomorrow with Holy Communion at 10am and Night Prayer at 8pm.

There will be a meal and service on Maundy Thursday and a Walk of Witness and Communion at the Cross on Good Friday.
