Holbeach team set off on Wacky Rally

Spend a grand total of £175 on a car with over 100,000 miles on the clock and you can’t expect too much from it.

But long standing friends Holbeach man Brian Gilham, John Weston and John Pearson intend driving their old banger through six countries, crossing the Swiss Alps and the Italian Dolomites – all in the name of charity.

The trio are setting off on the Wacky Rally on Friday in aid of Children in Need.

The rally was Brian’s idea “to rekindle our youth and to drive the famous Stelvio Pass in Northern Italy”, which he says was on his bucket list.

John Weston has travelled all the way from Melbourne to take part, and so the team has adopted an Australian theme for the drive from northern France to Rimini in northern Italy. They have also painted the 1995 petrol Mondeo in the 1970 Gulf racing colours of Ford GT40s and Porches.

Brian said: “The difficult driving will be on the alpine passes with very steep climbs and descents and many hairpin bends.”
