Holbeach Town Band’s annual Learn to Play Week got off to a tremendous start as nine new members took the opportunity to learn a new instrument for free.
The band’s musical director, Mel Hopkin says the event, which is now in it’s 13th year and open to all, has been a real success story.
He said: “We tend to get a very diverse group of people who we encourage to come along and choose an instrument.
“We then teach them how to use it and, if they want to make the step up they can come to our the free learner sessions.”
Run by Mr Hopkin and funded in part by charitable donations from third parties, the Holbeach Town Band gives those curious the chance to not only learn an instrument but progress up to the senior band via further tuition.
Hopkin believes providing children with an avenue in to music is essential, particularly as local schools can no longer offer training.
He said: “It’s important for younger people to learn music, it teaches them how to work as a team. It use to cost schools over £30 an hour to provide music classes; there’s just not enough money now.”
Learn to Play Week concludes tomorrow. For more details contact Mr Hopkin on 07743 246448.
