A training day to discover more on the postive ways in which creative arts can help support people with early stage dementia took place at the South Holland Centre in Spalding last week.

The day, delivered by Arts 4 Dementia, was put on for local artists and arts facilitators by South Holland based artist, Carol Parker in partnership with the South Holland Centre in Spalding and the day was made possible through funding put together by South Holland District Councillor Graham Dark, well known for his community work with older people and disability groups in the area.

Similar work in other parts of the country has shown that taking part in creative activities has great benefits for people with dementia who often pull back from social engagement from fear of embarrassment - this reduction in a person’s social circle and self-esteem is thought to further decrease cognitive stimulation Carol and the South Holland Centre now aim to seek support to run a pilot scheme which could offer weekly arts sessions to early-onset dementia patients and their carers.
