HEALTH MATTERS: By Head of clinical services for the south at Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust Jenny Hinchliffe

The hours of daylight are getting shorter which means there is much planning under way for winter pressures. We have also seen the commencement of a cataract surgery service at Johnson Community Hospital.

The surgery takes around 30-45 minutes where the cataract is removed from the eye and a lens put into the eye to correct the sight

Patients needing cataract surgery are now able to have both their pre-operative assessments and operations closer to home.

Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS) is grateful to United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust which has invested in new equipment for cataract surgery to be performed, working with our nurses, as a day case procedure at our local hospital under local anaesthetic. The Johnson Hospital League of Friends also contributed to some extra equipment and adaptions to the rooms and environment.

The new equipment enables nursing staff to measure patients’ eyes in preparation for cataract surgery so that full pre-operative assessment can be completed in clinic just before surgery. As a community hospital we have set criteria for patients who are able to have the procedure carried out here. Patients with complex unstable medical conditions and high grade cataracts may not be suitable due to the extra monitoring and medical input they may require.

The surgery takes around 30-45 minutes where the cataract is removed from the eye and a lens put into the eye to correct the sight.

We are fortunate to receive voluntary support from the South Holland Blind Society for patients waiting for the procedure. Chris comes every Thursday morning and helps the nurses prepare the patients, offering support and advice to help alleviate any anxieties and making those all-important cups of tea following the procedure. The volunteer team were recently honoured with an award in The Emily Jane Glen Memorial for Outstanding Volunteers category of the Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust Celebrating Success Awards. Congratulations and thank you, the support is really appreciated.

We hope that this service will continue to grow and we’re exploring other opportunities for expanding the day surgery procedures we provide at Johnson Hospital.
