A charity ball for a father-of-five fighting pancreatic cancer has been opened up to South Holland residents by his determined granddaughter.

Lorna Palmer (24), of Gedney Hill, is hosting the ball at Springfields Exhibition Centre, Spalding, on March 16 and is hoping about 200 people will attend the event.

Its aim is to raise money for two charities supporting pancreatic cancer patients and their families after Lorna’s grandfather Ron Thomson (71), of Moulton Chapel, was diagnosed with the condition four years ago.

The ball is at 7pm and includes a two-course meal, disco, auction and a raffle to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

Lorna, a trainee legal secretary at Roythornes Solicitors in Pinchbeck, said: “My grandad was told he had six months to live when he was diagnosed in March 2009.

“But he’s still here now and I decided to organise a charity event on a bigger scale than any our family has held before.

“There are people I know who have lost friends through pancreatic cancer who were in their 30s, so I want to push the cause more by having this charity ball.

“My grandad is extremely supportive of the event and thinks it’s a good idea, but unfortunately he won’t be able to make it.”

It is hoped up to 200 people will attend the ball which costs £25 and tickets are available from Lorna on 01406 330824 or 07725 325715.
