Staff and students at Spalding Grammar School started their new term today following a surprise announcement their headteacher is retiring.

Nigel Ryan notified parents and students by letter on Tuesday, after informing staff earlier in the day.

Mr Ryan, who has been at the school for 10 years, said: “I have decided to take early retirement at the end of the academic year. I am announcing this now so that the governors have plenty of time to appoint my successor.”

Last month, Mr Ryan was celebrating the school’s A-Level and GCSE results. He said: “I have had the honour of leading the Grammar School for 10 very rewarding years.

“The Grammar School has a long standing tradition of developing well-rounded, considerate, young adults who are ready to go on and become leaders in both the local community and further afield.

“I hope I have helped to build on that and enabled the school to flourish into the vibrant and successful 21st century grammar school it is today.

“It has been a pleasure to work with so many talented students and staff and help them on their way to successful careers and fulfilling lives. I have benefited from tremendous support, during both the successful and difficult times that naturally come when leading a 1,000-strong secondary school. However, it is time to let someone new enjoy the delights of working with such a talented and supportive community.”
