It was wet and “beyond repair” – but there was no hiding place for my straw trilby when a team of river clearing heroes set to work in Spalding.
The hat took flight when walking across a footbridge along the River Welland, lodging in reeds too far out to grab.
When I heard about the team effort to clear the river, I wondered if it would turn up – and there it was.
Twelve bags of rubbish were hauled from the river on Saturday in a joint bid to make the most of one of the town’s best assets.
Members of the Spalding Venture Scouts set sail in a joint bid with South Holland District Council and the police.
They were provided with bags and litter pickers from staff at South Holland District Council.
As well as my hat, the scouts collected a variety of rubbish during the two-hour event.
Their haul also included beer cans, a bicycle, a novelty mug and even part of a computer.
A spokesperson for South Holland District Council said: “The event was a joint initiative between ourselves, the police and the Venture Scouts.
“We would like to thank everyone who took part for their efforts. Unfortunately, the hat was beyond repair.”
