The church flower festival at St Mary Magdalene at Gedney isn’t the oldest in the district at 50.

Co-organisers Jane Webb, Carol Young and Hazel Horne believe Long Sutton church was the first to reach its 50th anniversary, and say that was a few years ago.

Jane, whose late mother-in-law Mollie Webb also helped organise flower festivals, says: “I would think that some of the ladies who help us from Long Sutton have probably been doing it the longest. I can’t go back 50 years, but they have possibly arranged flowers for most of those years.

“One of our flower arrangers has arranged at Chelsea.

“I think it’s very good it is still going after 50 years and that people still want to come and be wowed by flowers.

“It’s a very friendly festival. When you come into the church you hear a lot of laughter and you see a lot of happy faces.”

The organisers don’t know how many people hear that laughter and admire the flowers, because it is a free event. However, the enthusiasm of visitors remains undimmed, with thousands making the visit to St Mary Magdalene Church at Gedney yearly.
