Garden products company Gardman is moving from Moulton to Peterborough and axing up to 18 jobs through voluntary redundancies.
Gardman employs 80 people at its High Street head office and 230 overall with employees in Peterborough and King’s Lynn.
No date has been set for the switch, but Moulton ward district councillor Rodney Grocock understands it could be before Christmas and says it’s a big loss for South Holland.
Coun Grocock said: “I feel very sorry for anyone that’s got small children and then find out that dad or mum hasn’t got any work for the foreseeable future.”
Fellow ward councillor Coun Andrew Woolf said: “It’s very sad news that one of the major employers in the area is moving out of Moulton village.
“Gardman have operated from the site for many years and have supported local projects as well as its employees using businesses in the village such as the village shop, The Swan and the fish and chip shop.”
A Gardman spokesman said improved road links mean Moulton employees are within a commutable distance of the new base and the head office move will help unify sales, finance and commercial teams on one site.
She said the company’s “current overhead is not aligned with the size of the business” and it is seeking to become more flexible, dynamic and responsive to customers.
She described Gardman as a market leader and said it “must tackle difficult decisions” to maintain that position and benefit the majority of employees. Practical support is being given to those affected.
